Caring for the Deceased

Detail about our service

Choosing the type of funeral

Each Funeral Arranged by Glen Miller Funeral Directors is Different.

In England the majority of families arrange a funeral ceremony or service to mark the life of a loved one. This could be a religious ceremony held in a church or other place of worship, or it could be a civil ceremony.

Where a family would like a religious funeral ceremony, much of the preparation of the content of the ceremony is often arranged directly with the celebrant. This will include deciding on:

• The people who will take part and the things they will do
• Favourite hymns or music
• Readings, poetry and prayers
• The removal
• The committal

Glen Miller Funeral Directors. are available to provide support and advice to the family as they decide how they would like the funeral ceremony to take place.
Where a family would like a religious ceremony for their loved one, but does not have a link with a church or other place of worship, we can assist in making the necessary arrangements. We are also able to assist with advice on:

• Popular hymns and music
• Suggested scripture readings and poetry
• Musicians and singers
• The design and print of a Mass booklet or Order of Service
• Recording of a favourite piece of music to be played at the ceremony
• Church flowers and floral tributes

Religious

If you would like a religious ceremony to take place at a location other than a church or other place of worship, we will work with you to locate the best location for your needs and a celebrant. We will also help you to agree the content of the ceremony providing as much advice as is required. For more information or to talk to one of our experienced funeral arrangers, please call us on T: 0191 5191645 or email : info@glenmillerfuneraldirectors.co.uk

We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year

The committal can take the form of burial or cremation. This decision can be influenced by a range of factors including the wishes of the person who has died, family tradition or religious observance. The committal or Interment may take place as part of a funeral ceremony or separately to it, either before or afterwards.

Whatever you decide, Glen Miller Funeral Directors. will put in place the appropriate arrangements to ensure the funeral ceremony/committal is exactly as you would like it to be.

We are here to guide you every step of the way and to arrange a funeral unique to your family which is a fitting tribute to your loved one.

Cremation

Should you choose a Cremation, Glen Miller Funeral Directors will liaise with the crematorium of your choice to put in place the arrangements.
You will normally have the choice of a full service or a shorter committal service. The full service would typically be chosen by families who do not wish for a separate funeral service to take place. Either way, we will work with you to ensure that your wishes are carried out.

• Put you in touch with a celebrant if you would like one and do not have an existing preference
• Help you decide on the content of the ceremony
• Help you decide on the people who will take part and what they will do
• Help you select hymns, music and/or musicians
• Help you select readings and poetry
• Design and print a order of service booklet if you would like one

We will also take care of the Cremation Forms on your behalf.

Cremation offers every family the option of collecting the ashes of their loved one which can be kept, buried in a family plot, interned in the Columbarium Wall or Garden of Remembrance or scattered privately at your loved one’s favourite spot.

If you would like to transport the ashes overseas for burial or scattering, we will advise you on the requirements of airlines and individual countries.

Burial

Burial typically takes place in a church graveyard or a local cemetery. Some families may have a plot and others may need to purchase one.

Once you have decided where you would like the burial to take place, Glen Miller Funeral Directors . will make the necessary arrangements on your behalf.

If you have an existing family plot, we will require documentation relating to the grave and we will also need to check that there is space for a further burial. If you have an existing headstone, we can also arrange for a new engraving to be carried out.

If you require a new plot, Glen Miller Funeral Directors . will advise you in relation to availability and costs and once agreed, will make the appropriate arrangements. We can also advise you on the purchase of a headstone or other form of memorial when the time comes.

Humanist

Humanist funerals and memorial services offer a personal and fitting way to say goodbye to those who have lived without religion. Many thousands are conducted by our celebrants each year.

Humanist funerals bring people together to express sadness at the loss but also to celebrate the life lived. They focus sincerely and affectionately on the person who has died, paying tribute to the connections they made and left behind and the way they lived their life.

Practicalities

Whilst a funeral director is the professional most likely to deal with the practical arrangements of a funeral, what type of ceremony you choose is entirely up to you. And since funerals themselves have no legal status, humanist funerals – like all others – can be held in a variety of places, although in practice most are held in crematoria, cemeteries or woodland burial sites.

Working with a celebrant

British Humanist Association funeral celebrants are sensitive people, empathetic to the experience of bereavement but focused on providing a funeral ceremony that will be most fitting for the circumstances. They are familiar with cremation and burial procedures and will guide you through the whole process of arranging a funeral ceremony.

Funeral celebrants:

• Meet with the family or friends most closely connected with the person who has died to learn more about that person and ensure that the funeral justly captures their life and personality
• Advise on practical matters, such as options for the committal, for example, or the amount of time available for the ceremony at the crematorium
• Listen to your ideas on music or readings and provide their own suggestions if needed
• Share their ideas and draw on their experience when appropriate
• Liaise with those involved in the ceremony, for example, anyone who will be reading a tribute or a poem / piece of prose
• Write a unique ceremony that’s absolutely fitting for the person who has died and the circumstances
• Are a calm presence on the day, leading the ceremony with warmth and dignity
• Give you a presentation copy of the final script.
